The Washington Area Community Investment Fund (WACIF) is a nonprofit community development financial institution dedicated to providing below market-rate financing for developing and preserving affordable housing and community-based facilities in the Washington metropolitan area. WACIF makes loans to nonprofit housing developers, tenant-based cooperatives, and nonprofit service providers by securing investments from individuals, religious organizations, banks and other institutions committed to using capital for social change. Since its inception, WACIF has committed or funded $7.2 million to over 119 nonprofit organizations, leveraging $5.8 million in public and private resources in support of the development and preservation of more than 1,329 units of affordable housing and 14 community-based facilities.

WACIF is a partner in the CareBuilders Initiative, a program that provides technical assistance to Washington, DC center-based child care providers in the principles of financial management to enable them to obtain financing for facility expansion. The goal of the program is to improve access to affordable quality care services by creating 400 new child care slots.
